Udawalawe National Park

Udawalawe National Park, nestled just south of Sri Lanka’s central highlands, offers visitors a unique opportunity to witness exotic wildlife in their natural habitat. Established in 1972, the park spans an impressive 30,000 hectares and is centered around the Udawalawe Reservoir, which provides a vital water source for its diverse flora and fauna.

This sanctuary is a haven for nature and wildlife enthusiasts alike, featuring an array of species such as monkeys, buffaloes, iguanas, snakes, crocodiles, and a dazzling variety of birdlife. However, the park’s most iconic residents are its majestic elephants. Visitors can marvel at these gentle giants as they bathe, graze, and interact in their herds, creating unforgettable moments of natural wonder.

In addition to its wildlife, Udawalawe boasts a captivating landscape of open grasslands, marshes, and dense forests, making it an ideal spot for photography and nature exploration. Guided safari tours are available, offering an immersive experience into the park’s vibrant ecosystem, and the nearby Elephant Transit Home provides a heartwarming opportunity to learn about efforts to rehabilitate orphaned elephants before releasing them back into the wild.
