Sigiriya, one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic landmarks, is often hailed by locals as the “Eighth Wonder of the World.” This historic rock fortress rises approximately 200 meters above the jungle canopy, perched on a massive rocky plateau. Known as the Lion Rock, Sigiriya is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a storied past.
The fortress served as a retreat for King Kassapa in 473 AD, who infamously claimed the throne after murdering his stepfather. Evidence of this period can still be seen in the ruins and intricately designed gardens that surround the site. Among its remarkable features are ancient frescoes depicting Sinhalese maidens engaged in various tasks, found along the stairway leading up to the summit at 330 feet (100 meters).
Beyond its historical significance, Sigiriya offers breathtaking views that reward those who brave the climb. The sweeping vistas of the surrounding landscape are complemented by nearby attractions, such as the awe-inspiring Golden Temple of Dambulla and its magnificent cave temples. Together, they form an unforgettable journey into Sri Lanka’s rich cultural and natural heritage.
